RAPE

Rape has become a pretty big deal in todays age. Rape is the unlawful compelling of a person through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse.  A lot of people don't know how often rape happens. A lot of them also don't know that it is actually rape.

The Steubenville football players case was a prime example. They raped a girl who was highly intoxicated and was passed out. There were pictures and videos taken, and the boys didn't even act like what they were doing was wrong.

The main question was "does the United States have a rape culture?" I think the answer is yes.  So many things are based on sex and sex appeal. The media controls a lot of the rape culture. The song Blurred Lines was an example we looked at, it showed signs in the lyrics that made it sound about rape. "I know you want it," "what rhymes with hug me," "you're a good girl," and many more.  Not only the lyrics of songs talk about sex but the videos are just as bad or worse in some cases.

The media makes it look like its okay to be sexual all the time or at anytime. And a lot of people think that is ok. Young people mostly don't understand what they are doing and the effects it can have.
Although females are usually the victims, males do also get raped. Not nearly as much though. Usually when rape occurs for some reason the victim waits a while to report it. A lot of times rape happens but it isn't reported at all.

There has been instances when an professional or college athlete just becomes a superstar and is in the media, a rape case involving them has come out. People ask why did she wait so long to report it, and why did she report it right when he became really famous? Maybe some of these cases aren't true. Kobe Bryant paid the woman between three and four million dollars to stop talking about it and never bring it up. Jamison Winston the quarterback at Florida State who is in the running for the Heisman and has a chance to win a national championship was brought up in a rape case. But he was proved innocent.  The media obviously blew up both of the cases.
So yes I think America does have a rape culture but its our own fault. Media is the number one cause, but the real problem is if you are smart enough to know better.

MY LYFE

I am the oldest of three brothers. Being the oldest has many ups and downs, but so does being the middle child or youngest child.  Responsibility is a big thing when your the oldest child, especially when your involved with a farm. Being the oldest my dad always makes me do chores. My brothers aren't called upon to do much at all, but as soon as I'm gone one of them will have to do something.

Some kids have more heredity than others. My dad was tall and skinny when he was in high school and I got the skinny part. I inherited my moms height though she isn't very tall. My middle brother is going to be tall like my dad though. My parents both had blonde hair when they were younger but it got darker as they got older. Mine is doing the same thing. One thing I didn't inherit is eye sight. I don't have the best eye sight, but both of my parents have glasses and I don't need them.

Parental Characteristics have a lot to do with how a child acts. Most kids are like their parents and have the same views as their parents. My dad has a job that requires a lot of time so I'm not around him as much as my mom but I'm more like my dad. So that doesn't make a lot of sense. It must have to do with heredity.

The last thing that shapes a kid is their Cultural Environment.  Growing up in a small town I know almost everybody. It makes me a lot more friendly and out going I think. Small school allows me to participate in everything and give myself a lot more opportunities.

All those factors go into shaping a child. Good and bad things come from it. Every kid is different some may not be shaped by these factors at all but there is always heredity. The most important one in my mind is your Cultural Environment, that's a lot of people and a lot of things around you that make you who you are.

Birth Order

Does the order of where you are born in the family play a significant role in your personality and affect socialization?  Some sociologists think that is does affect your personality and socialization.

Some characteristics for the oldest child include: Responsible, conservative, follows parents' wishes, emotionally intense, perfectionist, driven, and leadership material. I'm the oldest sibling in my family but I wouldn't say I have those characteristics. But compared to my other siblings I do, not just because I am older though.

Some characteristics for the middle child include: peacemaker, negotiator, highly attuned to needs of others, doesn't like to follow authority, independent, and peer-focused. My brother that is in the middle of the siblings fits some of those roles. For example he is very independent because all he does is sit in his room and plays video games.

Characteristics of the youngest child include: laid back, highly social, dependent, creative, few expectations for self, and unconventional.  My youngest sibling is very different than us. He is very dependent, and somewhat laid back.

Sulloway said, "Younger siblings tend to pick interest that are diametrically opposite to those of their older siblings."  This is very true in my family, my youngest brother does not like the same things as us older two. We like sports and exercise activity, but my youngest brother does not. He would rather stay inside and do something like watch TV or play video games. It is not bad that he is like this, he just doesn't like the same things.

"Typical first-born strategy is to use the advantages of age, size and power to dominate a younger sibling," Sulloway says. That statement is also true, I do use the age factor a lot when it comes down to conflicts with my siblings. All siblings fight, whether its physically or none physically. Usually they grow away from the fighting as they get older.

The older sibling paves the way for the younger ones so they pretty much have an easy path.
I think that birth order does have affects on behavior but I also think a lot of kids grow out of it and change a lot as they get older and when they hang around different kids.

What i learned

This chapter I learned about many things involving my own life. Probably the most important thing we learned about was our roles and status. As people we all have many roles. Some of my roles include: student, athlete, son, friend, boyfriend, grandkid, worker, brother, and many other things. We all have many roles but we also have a master status. Your master status is your number one role you play. My master status has to be a "friend, or family member". I'm around my friends the most and they are very important that's why being a friend is probably my master status.

Tuesdays with Morrie

The movie Tuesdays with Morrie was an emotional roller coaster. There were times when I couldn't help smile, but there were times that made me feel terrible too. The movie shows what real love is and how someone who doesn't really know what love is can find it. If it wasn't for Morrie, Mitch would be hopeless. Morrie showed him how to care and how to get out of his comfort zone.

Mitch was afraid of death and I think a lot of people today are afraid of death too. If the conversation of death comes up some people avoid it and don't want to talk about it. But like Morrie said as soon as you can accept death everything will be okay.

Mitch had a girlfriend and he didn't know how to put other things aside to be a good lover. But Morrie taught him how to be a good lover and everything turned out right for Mitch and his lady friend.

Some people never fall in love because they are scared and they don't know where it will lead them. A lot of that has to do with how you are raised growing up.

MMA

The first question is "Why would a rational human being sign up to be a MMA fighter?" Like stated in the video, I think a lot of people do it for a social status. Guys want to feel masculine and being an MMA fighter is a good way to do that. There are many dangerous sports that can give people that masculine feeling. Such as bull riding, extreme stunting, running of the bulls, and there are many more. Maybe some of those athletes could care less about the "masculine" figure they get from their sport. Most of them enjoy getting an adrenaline rush. They know that there could be many dangerous consequences and they love that.
What will come after MMA? Will there be something worse and more dangerous to come evolving from MMA fighting? The Romans had men fight against lions in the Colosseum. Men also fought each other, using swords and other weapons. Maybe we will bring that back, have people fight with weapons.
MMA is the fasting growing sport in the world. More and more people want to have the label of an "fighter".  Its a fun sport to watch, people love violence. But will things go to far with what comes next?

Values

Everyone has different values in life, but I think a lot of people have many of the same ones. Mortality and humanitarianism is one of the biggest values. Religious faith and following God is the most important thing. Along with that I think a value everyone should have is  to make others life better. You should try to make the people you love happy.
Personal achievement is the second value. I want to be successful in everything I participate in. In school, sports, and life. If you want to be successful you can then provide for the people you love and make everyone happy.
Individualism is making yourself happy. If you are happy its easier to make other people happy and its easier to make the world a better place. You need to focus on your individual success sometimes to have a good life.
Work is a big value. People should find a career that they like so that it doesn't necessarily feel like work. If you are dedicated and are a hard worker you can find a job. There are people out there that are in desperate need of money but don't go find a job, but instead collect a check from the government. That takes away money from the people with a lot of money who put in a lot of time to make that money. Like I said, some people who need money bad don't even work. But there are people out there who are well of and wouldn't have to work another day in their life but they do just because they like it or they need to stay busy. Which person has the better values? The second one obviously.
Last but not least, freedom. The United States is known for "Freedom", which is true we are free. We have the freedom to choose what we want to do. You get to choose your religion and your religious practices. The government cant tell you what to do in those cases. But our freedom is shrinking so we need to use the freedom we have and be thankful for it.

Card GAME

  • If you could describe the game in one word, what would it be? Unique.
  • What did you expect at the beginning of the game? That it was going to be confusing
  • When did you realize that something was wrong? When it was all over and Mr. Reints told us about his trick.
  • How did you deal with it? Laughed, didn't affect me as much because I stayed in the same spot the whole time.
  • How did not being able to speak contribute to what you were feeling? I myself didn't need to say much but it was definitely making some other people mad and frustrated.
  •  Is my title above appropriate for the game of "culture."  Why or why not? Barnga has to do with cultural awareness. Players must realize the differences in rules to make the game work right.
  •  Is a universal language and set of customs necessary for world peace and harmony? There are a lot of misunderstandings because of different languages but I don't think it affects world peace too much.
  •  What can a simple card game teach us about our culture? Without actually knowing sometimes we just assume other people are wrong.

    American

The question is can we really be 100% American? Literally we can't be, why? Because the United States is made up of so many different races and cultures.
In the reading  "THE 100% AMERICAN" it tells about a basic day of a man. But also it describes that all of things he uses came from a different country.
So how can we be "100% American" when our world consists of things from other countries? America may be made up of a lot of countries but we have kind of made our own culture out of it. Also in the United States there are many different races. How can we have our own culture when there are so many? American culture is all of those put together to make a very unique culture.
When you put all of the "Elements of a Common American Culture" together that makes up what the American culture is. Individualism, Capitalism, Modernism, Religiosity, Secularism, Consumerism, and  Monoligualism are the elements that make up the culture.
Is America Multiculturalism or a Common Culture? I think Multiculturalism would be the correct answer but like I said before we make it into our own specific unique culture. No other country in the world has a culture like the United States. More and more people keep coming to the United States and the diversity is getting larger too.
So I think that we are a Multiculturalism country but we put it all together to make our own unique culture with a lot of diversity. We are 100% American but not everyone here is actually American.

    Ship Wreck oh no

In the situation of a Ship Wreck people would have to make tough choices on the spot. Maybe the toughest choice would be who to keep on the life boat.
The decision of who to keep would be made on knowledge and strength. Other things that you would consider when deciding would be age. A four year old and a eighty year old wouldn't be much help.
But you would have to be ethical and have a heart at the same time. People who have kids compared to people who don't have kids. You should definitely keep the parents.
If there was celebrities on the boat many people would try to help them but you have to think, would they be much help?  Americans would probably try to save the celebrities but if there is foreigners along they wouldn't care. Americans can be selfish at times and in this situation I am sure it would show a lot.

It would be a very tough situation and the choices would be even tougher. But you would just have to think about others and how it affects everyone.

    Social Imagination

Kids being born today are going to grow up different because of many things. There is a lot more media and technology now that will shape their lives. Communication is a lot better that also will shape their lives. Even the kids born before me didn't have as much technology as we had.

Growing up somewhere else would change me completely. Living in a small community you get the opportunity to know everyone around you. You have some worries but not as many if you were living in a big city. Another thing that would change has to do with school and sports. In a big city there wouldn't be as much opportunity to participate in activities like you can in small schools. I have played Soccer, baseball, basketball, and football since I was little. If I was in a bigger school that would probably be cut down to one sport.

A lot of things I worry about have to do with either sports, school, or what I am going to do in the future. I shouldn't worry too much about some of the things I do because I have it better than a lot of people. Some people have nothing and aren't as lucky as me to have both parents.

I worry about school all the time but it doesn't seem to help me to spend more time on it. But if I didn't worry about I wouldn't get anything done. So its not bad to worry about it a little bit.

    Freaks and Geeks

Last week in Sociology class we watched an episode of Freaks And Geeks. There were a couple groups I could sort out in the episode. The first one I sorted out was the cool kids/rebels, led by Daniel and Nick. Lindsay the main character kind of wants to get involved with that group of people later on in the episode. The other group I saw was the "geeks" it included Lindsay's younger brother Sam and two of his friends. During the episode they were constantly picked on by a bully so they were scheming a plan. I think  Daniel and Nick's group holds a lot of the power in the show. They walked around like they owned the place. Alan, the kid that bullied Sam also had some power. Alan used bullying to have power.

There were a few symbols in the episode. Like Lindsay's army jacket, she started wearing it so she could try to fit in with the cool group.  Another symbol would be the dance. Sam really wanted to go to the dance with Cindy so the dance caused him a conflict trying to get the courage to ask her.

I can relate to some of the things in the episode. Like getting the courage to do something and being nervous about it. I don't wear the clothes I wear to fit in though. I worry about grades a lot but I admit I am a pretty big slacker. Its not bad to worry about grades because you are supposed to get good grades. I want to go to college so I can get a degree and start a good career. All in all I think this episode showed good examples of how people change to fit in and change to get what they want.

    WHO AM I

Hi my name is Chazz, and this is my blog. Things I enjoy doing consist of playing sports, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Family and friends are also a big part of my life. I like to think I have many friends that enjoy being around me as much as I enjoy being around them. Things that make me happy are being with the people who like me and doing what I like. I think my purpose in life is to make the best of it and make other people's  lives better.
