Last week in Sociology class we watched an episode of Freaks And Geeks. There were a couple groups I could sort out in the episode. The first one I sorted out was the cool kids/rebels, led by Daniel and Nick. Lindsay the main character kind of wants to get involved with that group of people later on in the episode. The other group I saw was the "geeks" it included Lindsay's younger brother Sam and two of his friends. During the episode they were constantly picked on by a bully so they were scheming a plan. I think Daniel and Nick's group holds a lot of the power in the show. They walked around like they owned the place. Alan, the kid that bullied Sam also had some power. Alan used bullying to have power.
There were a few symbols in the episode. Like Lindsay's army jacket, she started wearing it so she could try to fit in with the cool group. Another symbol would be the dance. Sam really wanted to go to the dance with Cindy so the dance caused him a conflict trying to get the courage to ask her.
I can relate to some of the things in the episode. Like getting the courage to do something and being nervous about it. I don't wear the clothes I wear to fit in though. I worry about grades a lot but I admit I am a pretty big slacker. Its not bad to worry about grades because you are supposed to get good grades. I want to go to college so I can get a degree and start a good career. All in all I think this episode showed good examples of how people change to fit in and change to get what they want.
